Does size matter?
Does size matter? I mean really matter?
Thanks to centuries of exaggeration and the belief that the size of your penis says something about you as a man, it does indeed matter for a large number of men.
In 2006, researchers at California State University and the University of California asked over 50,000 heterosexuals men and women questions relating to penis size and their findings were later published by the American Psychological Association.
This study found that penis size definitely matters more to men than women.
When asked, 85% of women said they were satisfied with their partner's penis size, but only 55% of men were satisfied with their penis size.
Why would this be?
Well, a lot of men who worry about the size of their penis have penises that fall slap bang in the average size category - somewhere between five and six inches long.
If you're looking down at your penis - as men tend to do - it always appears smaller than it actually is. Equally, if you are carrying any fat around your stomach, the full length of your penis is going to be obscured from your view and will again look smaller.
Now flick to the porn channel. Image after image of very well endowed men (no doubt helped on their way by behind the scene penis pumps, camera angles and the like) and women who love well endowed men. We all know deep down that this is fantasy, but then again most men like to think that they have the makings of a porn stud.
Most women see things differently.
The vagina is a muscle that expands and contracts to the size required. That's why it can hold a tampon in place and expand to give birth to a baby. In that sense, size isn't important.
What's more, the length of the vagina extends to a length of about four inches - less in women who have not given birth. Four inches is a lot shorter than the average length of a penis.
If you think about it, a woman can derive a lot of pleasure from your fingers - and you would have to have huge hands for your fingers to be anywhere near the size of an average penis.
Even more important for a woman, the nerve endings that give her pleasure during penetration and intercourse are concentrated in the first third of the vagina. Indeed the vulva, clitoris and the part of the vagina closest to the outside are the most sensitive areas - that's why more women experience orgasms via clitoral stimulation than do by penetration.
That's why when it comes to sex and pleasing a woman, most sex therapists agree - what happens on the outside is more important than what happens on the inside.
While the length of your penis will have little impact on sexual satisfaction for your partner, some studies have shown that the girth of your penis can increase sexual pleasure. The theory is that a penis with a larger girth may give greater clitoral stimulation. Although there is little evidence to suggest that devices such as penis pumps increase length, they have been shown to increase girth - so if you want more girth, that's something you might consider. The same is true of penis pills.
So does size matter?
For the vast majority of women no - and that should be the case for the vast majority of men too.
